Najarian Associates was retained by Middlesex County to design a new public walkway along the Arthur Kill waterfront in the Borough of Carteret, NJ.
County: Middlesex
Town: Carteret
Najarian Associates was retained by Middlesex County to design a new public walkway along the Arthur Kill waterfront in the Borough of Carteret, NJ.
Prior to the construction of the Borough’s waterfront park in 2003, this mile-long walkway was completely unavailable. In an effort to clean up natural resources and provide much-need waterfront public access, Najarian proposed and designed a number of structural features and public amenities for the Carteret Arthur Kill Walkway.
Planned Improvements
The Carteret Arthur Kill Walkway will consist of a raised boardwalk that extends southward along the Arthur Kill shoreline from the waterfront park to an existing pier. South of the pier area, the walkway will transition to a paved (at-grade) path on the uplands, overlooking adjacent wetlands and open waters of the Arthur Kill.
The beautification efforts for the walkway will not only provide new waterfront recreational opportunities (jogging, ecotourism/wildlife observation, biking, sunbathing, fishing, star gazing, waterfront sightseeing, outdoor photography, etc.), but also complement the recreational opportunities provided by the Borough’s adjacent waterfront park (e.g., picnics, outdoor concerts, festivals, etc.) and proposed marina (e.g., boating and kayaking).
Together, they will foster a greater sense of community and environmental awareness.
Additional design improvements include:
- Observation decks/overlooks
- Bike racks
- Benches
- Shade structures
- Lighting
- Emergency call boxes
- Security cameras
- Public education signs
- Trash receptacles
- Pier access
Technical Services
